NAICS Codes List

NAICS code system is the North American Industry Classification System. These codes are used by the government and various business organizations to classify as per the economic standard of the concerned countries.

The NAICS codes list has come as a replacement of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. There are few organizations that still follow the SIC standard of bifurcation. Any business is a single business; but the various departments are considered as different establishments.

The NAICS code list system gives the establishment a six digit code. This code is based on the details about the industry. The first five digits used in the NAICS code list are the same for Canada, Mexico and United States. This need not be the same mandatorily. The sixth digit is the code for the national industry. The first and the second digit give the code of the largest industry. The third digit is for the subsector of the larger industry. The fourth digit represents the group of the industry and finally the fifth digit represents the specific industry.

One of the examples of the NAICS codes list is for instance of Electric Contractor – the code is NAICS 238210. The breakup of this code is as follows:

• 23 : For the Construction industry sector
• 238 : For the subsector called trade contractors
• 2382 : For the industry group for building contractors
• 23821 : For the electrical and wiring contractors
• 238210 : For the country code which is universal

When the businesses are awarded the government contracts it is compulsory to get them listed. This is essential as the business can get future contracts and it becomes convenient for the government to identify the business. The business can also track the details of the competitors based on the NAICS codes list s. They can know which businesses are running successfully under government contracts.
